Beach wheelchairs Kempsey Shire

With support from the Macleay Disability Inclusion Group, beach mobility aids are available for hire across the Kempsey Shire, through a trial initiative aimed at making our beaches more accessible to all.

Beach wheelchairs and walkers available for hire 

We offer free day hire of the following specially designed beach mobility aids, to both the local community and visitors to our Shire. 

 

Hippocampe Beach wheelchairs

The Hippocampe wheelchair is a specialized mobility device designed to provide individuals with disabilities access to challenging terrains that are often difficult or impossible for standard wheelchairs.

Hippocampe Beach & All Terrain Wheelchair

Assistance is recommended, and in very soft sand or for larger individuals, two assistants may be needed for effective navigation.

Dimensions

  • The wheelchair is lightweight at 17 kg (37.5 lb.) 
  • Beach wheelchairs come in two different sizes Extra Large and Medium, which relates to the length of the leg area. 
  • Other dimensions are the same on both units and are shown below:

Medium Wheelchair Dimensions

  • Seat depth – 37cm
  • Seat width – 42cm
  • Seat height (from ground) – 34cm
  • Back rest height – 39cm
  • Head rest – fully adjustable
  • Seat length (back of seat to end of floor foot well) – 82cm
  • Total length of unit – 180cm
  • Width with balloon wheels –100cm

Extra Large Wheelchair Dimensions

  • Seat depth - 37cm
  • Seat width - 42cm
  • Seat height (from ground) - 34cm
  • Back rest height - 39cm
  • Head rest - fully adjustable

  • Total length of unit - 203cm

Where are they available?

Our mobility aids are conveniently located at our coastal Macleay Valley Coast Holiday Parks.  

The items can be booked using the booking form below and are available at the following locations: 

  • Crescent Head: Wheeleez all-terrain rollator walker 

  • Hat Head: Hippocampe beach wheelchair – Extra Large 

  • Horseshoe Bay, South West Rocks: Hippocampe beach wheelchair – Medium 

Pre-booking is essential. Bookings are to be made using the booking request form below. 

Duration of hire

Bookings are for a full day from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Items can be picked up/returned at any time between these hours.

During peak times (9:30 am - 10:30 am and 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm), there may be delays in pick-up/returns – patience is appreciated. 

Things to Consider

Before booking, consider any specific issues related to the user's disability. Check if the items are suited suitable for your/the person the user and familiarise yourself with the Use and Safety conditions.

All wheelchair users must have a carer/assistant to aid them in transferring to/from the chair and to push the chair, as they are not self-propelling. Some users may need multiple people to assist with push/pull of beach wheelchair in the sand.

Booking Process

  1. Hire is free, but pre-booking is essential with a 2 business days notice required.
  2. Read the user guides and conditions of use here before making an online booking.
  3. Complete a booking request form here to request a beach mobility aid.
  4. For availability queries, contact Council's Customer Service team between 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday on 02 6566 3200.
  5. Persons hiring the beach mobility aid must provide photo identification, recorded with booking details.
  6. Booked items will be collected from/returned to the holiday park office at the relevant location - details will be confirmed in the booking confirmation email. 

Important Note: Bookings are not confirmed until you receive a confirmation email from us.
