Bushfire Danger Period
The Bush Fire Danger Period began on 1 October 2022 for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) Lower North Coast Zone. This means you now require a permit to light a fire in the open in Kempsey Shire.
Normally, the Bush Fire Danger Period runs from 1 October to 31 March each year, but these dates may vary due to local conditions. If you're planning to light a fire in the open during the Bushfire Danger Period, you must obtain a fire permit.
What is a fire permit?
Fire permits help ensure residents of the shire use fire safely by imposing conditions on how a fire is lit and maintained.
The permit system ensures agencies like the NSW RFS know when and where landholders intend to burn. This helps to ensure appropriate measures are in place and fires remain under control. Permits are issued by authorised Permit Issuing Officers.
How to get a permit
Permits are free and easy to obtain. Contact your local Fire Control Centre on 02 6562 1964 or visit the RFS website for more information about fire permits.
Please note there are heavy penalties if you don't follow restrictions or rules.
Requirement to give notice before lighting a fire
There is a year-round requirement to give at least 24 hours’ notice to the RFS and all adjoining neighbours before lighting the fire: see Notify us of your planned burn.
Preparing for the Bushfire Danger Period
Council encourages you to:
- create or review your Bushfire Survival Plan
- clear around your home by mowing lawns, raking up leaves and cleaning out gutters
- know the bushfire danger rating every day
- know how you will get information in a bushfire emergency.
