Aboriginal Trackers Talk

Aboriginal trackers played an important and sometimes controversial role in NSW law enforcement. From the foundation of the present NSW police force in 1862 through to 1973, Aboriginal men and some women were employed as trackers to search for people lost in the bush, capture bushrangers and search for stolen stock.

In this talk, Dr Michael Bennett will focus on some fascinating trackers from the Kempsey district including Dundally, a Queensland Aboriginal man who was based at Kempsey in the 1860s and Billy Holten of the upper Macleay River who worked closely with Jerseyville Police. Trackers were employed at Kempsey at least until the 1950s, including Uncle Ray Peckham who now lives in Dubbo. Their stories are worth bringing to light.

Dr Michael Bennett is a Sydney based historian working on native title claims and Aboriginal heritage projects. His interest in trackers stems from his early years in Dubbo hearing stories about Tracker Alec Riley who is regarded as one of the best. His book Pathfinders, A history of Aboriginal trackers in NSW was published in 2020.
