Primary students to learn about waste and sustainability

Primary school children and teachers across the Kempsey Shire will be having fun while learning about proactive ways to care for the environment through a new school-based program.

Kempsey Shire Council has engaged specialist educators, Impact Environmental Education, to deliver curriculum-linked waste and sustainability workshops during Term 2.  

The educators will teach workshops that raise awareness of waste issues, explore what happens to waste and recycling. These workshops are designed for all ages of primary school students. 

Kempsey Shire Council’s Waste Resource Officer, Louise Hoade, said, the program was about empowering teachers, students and their families to reduce waste.

“Using the right bin and understanding why it’s important reduces the impacts on landfill and the environment as well as reduces costs to our local community, she said. 

Impact Environmental Sustainability Programs Director, Jacqui Murray, said, waste education at the school level plays an important role in developing sustainable communities. 

“Young people learning about how to take responsibility for their waste fosters respect for the place in which we live and for those we share it with,” Ms Murray said.

“Children are motivated by what they have learnt in their workshops and go home and enact changes in the home.”
