Diseased Norfolk Island Pine to be removed at South West Rocks

An iconic Norfolk Island Pine located at 21 Memorial Avenue South West Rocks will be removed on 31st May 2021 due to Norfolk Pine Canker (Neofusicoccum parvum), a fast-acting fungal disease that can kill the host tree in as little as two years.
The contagious disease affects the pines from the top down with signs and symptoms including gradual deterioration of health, bare canopies and sap leaking from tree wounds (gummosis), resulting in a risk of cross-contamination of other pines.
Following the confirmation in 2018 that the canker was present in several pines in South West Rocks, Council immediately enacted a management plan to care for the pines and all efforts are being made to allow the remaining trees the best chance of rejuvenation and preservation of their health.
After careful monitoring and ongoing maintenance, the health of the pine situated at 21 Memorial Avenue South West Rocks has deteriorated, following infection of the fungal disease and presents a risk to public safety and neighbouring pines.
Road closures near the site on Memorial Avenue will be necessary from 7.00am until 5.00pm Monday 31st May to enable arborists to carry out the removal using a crane and specialist equipment.
Traffic control will be in place to direct residents and council requests that all vehicles be moved from street parking areas between 17 - 25 Memorial Avenue before work commences.
